Hinges are the balance mechanism that keeps the door upright. Therefore, hinges allow the doors to move more easily. That’s why fitting the hinges correctly will keep the door working properly. If the door is not installed correctly, the door will not open or close.
Door hinges are actually very easy to change. Besides, the door hinges need to be maintained from time to time to have a longer life.
So how to install the door hinge and what should be considered when installing the door hinge, we will examine them all together.
What Should Be Considered When Installing Door Hinges?
1. First of all, choose a quality door hinge.
Door hinges can be chrome, aluminum, brass plated, or steel. Chrome or aluminum models can be preferred to get a more affordable door hinge. However, it would be the best decision to buy a steel door hinge. Because steel hinges are more durable and long-lasting, it will also increase the service life of the door.
2. Glass door hinge and wooden door hinge are different from each other. Choose hinge according to the door model.
Since the hinge of glass doors is different from the hinge of wooden doors, you must specify this when purchasing. Materials such as silicone are used to fix the glass door hinge.
3. Consider the opening direction of the door when buying hinges.
If the door opens both inwards and outwards, a double-sided spring hinge must be purchased. Also, if the door is to be opened in one direction, it is sufficient to buy a one-way hinge.
4. Mount the hinges upright on the door.
Installing the hinges on the door at an incline makes it difficult to open and close the door. This will cause the door to quickly wear and tear by rubbing against the frame and frame. If the hinge is crooked, it must be removed and reinstalled correctly.
You can measure the slope of the hinge with the spirit level.
Door Hinge Installation Steps
Fitting a door hinge is pretty easy. We will reinforce the door hinge team stages, which we explained step by step below, by supporting them with video.
IMPORTANT! The first thing you need to do is to place a chock under the door to prevent the door from falling while removing the old hinge.
IMPORTANT! First, remove the upper hinge and install a new one in its place. Then remove the lower hinge and install a new one in its place. In this way, the balance of the door will not be disturbed.
IMPORTANT! After removing the old hinge, smooth the place where the hinge came off with sandpaper and correct any roughness.
1.Firstly, mark the place where you will put the hinge on the door where you will mount it and mark it with a pencil. Then mark the places where the screws will be inserted and drill small holes. These small holes will prevent the door from cracking when installing the hinge.
2.Hinge consists of 2 parts. One of the hinges is attached to the door and the other to the frame of the door. You can see how the direction of the door hinge is adjusted in the image below.
There is no need to leave a certain gap in the hinge attached to the top of the door. However, it should be ensured that the door can be opened and closed easily by leaving a space of 1.5 cm from the bottom in the hinge to be attached under the door.
While leaving a space, do not leave more than 2cm space. If you leave a lot of space, it will be easy for dust and insects to enter under the door.
Also, the hinge attached to the bottom of the door should be mounted at a height of 20cm from the bottom of the door.
3.One end of the hinge should be installed with the end down when fitting into the door frame.
4.When attaching the other end of the hinge to the door, it should be installed with its end facing upwards.
5.The purpose of this is to ensure that the hinges fit into each other easily.
The hinge to be attached to the door is attached to the door opening. The hinges should be fitted flush with the door and the door frame.
For the hinge to be installed, the door frame must be pre-assembled.
